Residence Hall Director

The Residence Hall Director (RHD) is a full time, 10-month, live-in general staff member responsible for the daily operations of a residence hall or on-campus apartment. The Housing and Residence Life Office is committed to providing residents a comfortable, educational, diverse, and caring community where academic success, personal growth, and social responsibility are valued.  


A live-in position is one where the individual maintains an on-campus apartment as their primary residence. RHDs must reside in an on-campus apartment to fulfill the duties of the position. The department provides an apartment and meal plan to allow the RHD to be visible in their community, eat meals in the cafeteria, attend meetings and events regularly, and respond to emergencies within their community.  


Qualification:  



  • High School Diploma


 Preferred Qualifications:  



  • Previous experience in working with high school or college students  

  • Previous work experience in Housing and Residence Life

  • Possess good verbal communication, organizational, and time management skills 


 


Roles, Duties, and Responsibilities:  


The Residence Hall Director is responsible for cultivating a sense of belonging through a variety of student engagement and student success initiatives within the residence hall. The Residence Hall Director reports to the Director of Housing and Residence Life and collaborates with fellow staff members for programmatic initiatives, and the overall student experience of their assigned residential community. The duties and responsibilities are as follows:  


 


Administrative Duties 


 



  • Display initiative and leadership in administering the managerial duties and responsibilities relevant to the position 

  • Serve as the immediate supervisor for designated Resident Assistants and Information Assistants 

  • Prepare assigned residence hall for all residents to move into prior to the fall and spring semester 

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records for every student in the residence hall.  

  • Maintain accurate records for every assigned bed in the residence hall.   

  • Perform computer skills for duties, such as completing reports, reviewing Campus ID card access, and reviewing cameras to bookmark events and report violations 

  • Lock and/or unlock and secure the assigned residence hall at specified times 

  • Conduct announced and unannounced room inspections 

  • Submit maintenance reports after weekly inspections 

  • Address any violations of the Code of Student Conduct by documenting the situation and referring the student to the Director of Housing and Residence Life or District Dean of Student Services through a Campus Appearance Ticket and Incident Report.   

  • Properly check out each residence hall student and submit accurate paperwork based on each check-out with documented charges 


 


Leadership and Advocate for Student Success 



  • Serve as a partner in the student's total development by working with the Advising and Retention Center, Student Counseling, Testing, and Disability Support Services, Student Activities and other offices as needed. 

  • Facilitate leadership opportunities and support all students in leadership development, specifically leadership events sponsored by Residence Life. 

  • Contribute to the development and facilitation of the residential curriculum. 

  • Contribute to recruitment and retention programs and initiatives. 


 


Student Conduct and Crisis Management 



  • Assist in the case of emergencies and severe weather with the assigned residence hall 

  • Maintain an accurate list of all residents to be utilized in case of fire, tornado, or other emergencies requiring students to evacuate.   

  • Communicate any student concerns as it pertains to mental health and Title IX-related issues to the appropriate administrators.  

  • Follow procedures as outlined in emergency NWCC Emergency Response Plan. 


 


Physical Abilities and Work Environment 


Physical abilities of this position include:  



  • Ability to communicate professionally both orally and in written form 

  • Climb stairs to reach the highest floor of assigned residence hall multiple times throughout the day  

  • Walking (inside and outside in the elements of wind, rain, snow, etc.). Residence Hall Directors are required to be able to access all of the residence hall rooms. 

  • Lifting up residence hall mattresses to inspect for damage and desk chairs to place in appropriately in room 

  • Bending at the waist and/or knees to open drawers, look under beds, etc.  

  • Arm movement to open closet doors, drawers of chests, and desks, as well as reaching arms above head to reach shelves.   

  • Sitting to view cameras, perform computer work, greet residents, complete paperwork, etc.  

  • Hand movement to type, write, file, and other clerical duties. 

  • Speaking to students, guests, and other college officials regarding the policies and processes for students who reside on-campus, including respectful confrontation 

  • Ability to view a computer screen for 15 – 30 minutes at a time 

  • Resides primarily in provided housing accommodations while residents are on-campus.  

  • Able to work two evening shifts during the week as well as select weekends as needed and communicated in advance (or in the event of emergency) by the Director of Housing and Residence Life. Weekend availability is a limited requirement within the Residence Hall Director role, however, the RHD is expected to assist with emergency related matters, or departmental operations as they arise in the RHD’s assigned residence hall or on campus.  

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Housing and Residence Life and District Dean of Student Services.
