Summary You will serve as an INTERDISCIPLINARY PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/OCEANOGRAPHER in the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) of FLT NUMER OCEANGPHY METEO CTR. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. Responsibilities You will serve as a specialist in oceanography for oceanographic databases, the oceanographic interpretation and evaluation of numerical model output, and physical oceanographic analyses. You will make independent scientific decisions and to draw valid scientific conclusions from analyses of varied physical oceanographic observations and applications of fundamental oceanographic theories. You will report investigations and recommendations in the form of informal manuscripts, technical reports, operational concept documents, software requirements specifications, and occasionally scientific journal articles. You will support (with oceanographic analysis, techniques, and tools) and serve as an Oceanography Subject Matter Expert to military-manned warfare area Reach Back Cells in support of operations and exercises. You will configure, implement, and validate circulation models in support of Navy and Maritime Homeland Defense requirements. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In addition to the Basic Education Requirements (SEE EDUCATION SECTION), your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: *Experience applying knowledge of physical oceanography and the marine environment and its underlying theoretical principles. *Experience applying analytical and statistical procedures for the scientific interpretation of physical oceanographic data, both observed and modeled, and in the presentation of the findings of such analyses. *Experience using UNIX-based and PC computers for data collection, processing, database development and analyses. *Experience expressing clear environmental data and information in written and/or computer generated graphical form. *Experience handling large amounts of complex data by computer and be capable of preparing and modifying computer routines for the reduction and analysis of these data. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. 1360: A. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. OR B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
