PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/OCEANOGRAPHER/DATA SCIENTIST
Summary You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENTIST/OCEANOGRAPHER/DATA SCIENTIST in the FULL SPCETRUM GEOINT BRANCH (NP213) of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS. Responsibilities You will serve as a senior analyst providing guidance to a multidisciplinary team of physical scientists and oceanographers. You will provide technical guidance to the junior branch members You will maintain the technical adequacy of data analysis that is required to produce fleet products and publication of scientific conclusions. You will maintain currency on the latest techniques in satellite oceanography, image analysis methodology, and deriving bathymetry. You will represent the Warfighting Support Center (WSC) at conferences, technical meetings, and working groups. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications For PHYSICAL SCIENTIST: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of SPECIALIZED experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience utilizing image derived bathymetry to provide scientific conclusions derived from the data gathered. Experience utilizing principles and techniques related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Experience deriving solutions based on physical science data gathered, relaying information to an interdisciplinary team of scientists. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience utilizing image derived bathymetry and satellite oceanography to conduct data analysis. Experience planning, organizing, conducting, and administering seagoing and land-based study of ocean phenomena for the purpose of interpreting, predicting, utilizing, and controlling forced and events. Experience deriving solutions based on physical science data gathered, relaying information to an interdisciplinary team of scientists. For DATA SCIENTIST: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of SPECIALIZED experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience providing scientific and technical data evaluation, correlation, derivation, fusion and presentation of oceanographic and bathymetric data. Experience creating scripts or programs (e.g., Python, C++, Java, etcetera) to enhance data analysis. Experience utilizing established procedures to design new analysis standards, quality control techniques, and new procedures. Education For PHYSICAL SCIENTIST: Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. ***TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION*** For OCEANOGRAPHER: Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics. ***TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION*** For DATA SCIENTIST: Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess: Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.
