This is the proficiency level I classification in the Social Worker series. The work is performed in a medical, mental health or psychiatric setting, involving the performance of social services for inmates, clients, or patients of state hospitals, clinics, and institutions. It includes routine and standard services for patients and patients' families. Incumbents are responsible for management of assigned client casework, which includes obtaining data for compiling social histories; helping patients in obtaining assistance from private social agencies, Veterans Administration, Social Security Administration, and other governmental sources; counseling patients on problems encountered in institutional living; and participating in discharge planning. Cases which appear to involve severe emotional complications are referred to a superior. The work is performed under general or close supervision. Supervision is received from a Master's level social worker, a social worker in a higher classification, or from an administrative superior.
